Chess Openings
Every Kid Must
Master
Start winning from move 1. The 4 most powerful openings β Italian Game, Sicilian Defense, London System & Ruy Lopez β explained simply for ages 6β15.
The 3 Golden Rules of Every Opening
Every strong opening follows these three principles. Memorize openings all you want β but break these rules and you'll lose anyway. Master these first.
Control the Center
Place pawns and pieces on or near e4, e5, d4, d5. The player who owns the center controls the whole board.
Develop Your Pieces
Move each piece once before moving any piece twice. Get Knights before Bishops. Don't bring the Queen out early!
Castle Early
Castle within the first 10 moves. A King stuck in the center is the easiest target in all of chess.
The 4 Openings Every Child Should Learn

The Italian Game
Best opening for beginners Β· Fast development Β· Targets f7The Italian Game is the perfect first opening for any child. Played for over 500 years and loved by World Champions today, it teaches all three opening principles naturally β develop fast, control the center, and pressure the opponent from move 3.
Italian Game after 3.Bc4
The Bishop on c4 stares directly at f7 β the weakest pawn in Black's position. This creates immediate threats and forces Black to defend from move 1.
1. e4 β Opens the center, frees your Bishop and Queen, and claims d5 and f5 immediately.
2. Nf3 β Develops a Knight toward the center AND attacks the e5 pawn, putting pressure on Black right away.
3. Bc4 β The Italian Bishop aims at f7, the weakest square near Black's King. Instant winning threats!
β Strengths
- Fast development, 3 moves
- Targets f7 immediately
- Natural, easy to remember
- Magnus Carlsen uses it
! Watch Out For
- Black can defend with d6
- Don't bring Queen out early
- Castle kingside quickly!
The Sicilian Defense
Most played opening in the world Β· Fight back as Black Β· Asymmetric attackPlaying Black doesn't mean being passive! The Sicilian is the most popular response to 1.e4 β used by Fischer, Kasparov, and every top player. Black fights back asymmetrically, creating positions where both sides have real winning chances.
Why 1β¦c5? Instead of mirroring White, Black attacks d4 from the side β creating an uneven battle where each player attacks on different wings.
For younger kids (under 9): Start with the Sicilian Dragon (β¦g6 after Nf6) β builds a "dragon" pawn structure and attacks ferociously on the Queenside!
Fun Fact: The Sicilian is played in over 25% of all tournament games from local clubs to the World Championship!
β Why Kids Love It
- Black isn't just defending
- Creates exciting attacks
- Tons of sharp tactical lines
- Used by Fischer vs Spassky
! Challenges
- More complex than Italian
- Multiple variations to learn
- Best for age 9+ to start
The London System
Same setup every game Β· Rock-solid structure Β· Less memorization neededThe London System is the most reliable opening for consistent play. Called a "system" because you play the same moves regardless of what Black does! Build a pyramid structure and slowly outplay the opponent. Magnus Carlsen uses it at the World Championship level!
The London pyramid: Pawns on d4, e3, c3 form a solid triangle. Bishop on f4, Knight on f3, Bishop on d3 all aim toward Black's Kingside β an unstoppable attack is brewing!
Perfect for kids: Less memorization! Play the same setup against almost anything Black does. Build your structure, castle, then attack with h4βh5!
The London Attack: After setup, advance h4βh5 to rip open the Kingside. This attack is incredibly difficult to stop once the London structure is in place!
β Why It Works
- Same setup every game
- Solid, hard to attack early
- Easy h4βh5 pawn storm
- Used by Magnus & Nakamura
! Watch Out For
- Less center control initially
- Must still develop Nf3
- Don't move Bishop twice early
The Ruy Lopez
500 years of history Β· Deepest strategy Β· The "King of Openings"Named after a 16th-century Spanish priest, the Ruy Lopez is the most deeply studied opening in chess history. If a child aspires to be a serious tournament player or reach 1500+ rating, this is a must-learn. It creates rich, complex middlegames with strategic depth that keeps rewarding you for years.
The Big Idea: Bb5 pressures the c6-Knight which defends the e5 pawn. White threatens to eventually win the center pawn and take control. It's subtle but deadly!
For juniors: Start with the Berlin Defense (3β¦Nf6) as Black β Magnus Carlsen's favorite weapon to neutralize the Ruy Lopez!
History: Kasparov vs. Karpov played Ruy Lopez in almost every World Championship game through the 1980s and 1990s. Hundreds of books exist on just this one opening!
β For Advanced Kids
- Deepest strategic opening
- Teaches long-term planning
- Used at every level to 2800
- Leads to rich endgames
! Prerequisites
- Best for 800+ rated players
- Requires strategic thinking
- Long theory to learn over time
